Snake Davis and the Burden of Paradise

Snake Davis and the Burden of Paradise

They are back again. Always a really popular gig Snake brings the Burden of Paradise back again for another evening of music and food. The band brings breathtaking skill, warm co-operation and witty anarchic banter. Burden of Paradise invites its audience into a world of tenderness, virtuosity and human frailty. No drums. Just voice, saxophone and a pulsing engine room of double bass and guitar with unique interpretations of evocative songs from Dylan to Dowland are spell-binding. As for the name the band say that we are all in paradise, if only we knew it. The burden is to accept...

Cobbles & Clay closed 6-10 June 2016 for BBC filming and some exciting changes to the café

Cobbles & Clay closed 6-10 June 2016 for BBC filming and some exciting changes to the café

The BBC production team, who have been using the upstairs space at Cobbles & Clay for meetings over the past few months, have now started setting up for filming of of Sally Wainwright’s TV film drama about the Brontes ‘To Walk Invisible’, on Haworth’s Main Street. Filming will take place 6-9 June 2016 which unfortunately means we have to close for a few days but we’re taking the opportunity to make some exciting changes to the café. Our cake fridge and produce deli will be moved closer to the entrance so that customers can get to them without blocking up the till area, and the coffee machine and till are being moved closer to the kitchen. We’re also creating extra seating downstairs, bringing in some new display shelving and adding a lick of paint. Cobbles & Clay will re-open on Saturday 11 June 2016. We’re also very excited that our sister gift shop Daisy Days and the cellar of our old premises, which are further down Main Street, will be part of the 1840s set being created for the film. Until filming starts on 6 June, Main Street and all its shops are open as...
Haworth’s home of veggie, vegan and gluten-free friendly food

Haworth’s home of veggie, vegan and gluten-free friendly food

It’s May 2016 already (where is this year going?!) which means that Coeliac disease awareness week (9-15 May) and National Vegetarian Week (16-22 May) are coming up so we thought we’d take the opportunity to highlight the variety of veggie, vegan and gluten-free food we have on offer at Cobbles & Clay in Haworth. When Jill Ross first opened the café and pottery painting studio nearly 10 years ago, it was originally a veggie café and we still take pride in being one of the few cafes in Bronte Country which happily caters for a wide range of dietary requirements – as well as bacon sandwiches for those that want them! We know how difficult it can be if you have certain dietary requirements or preferences to find a place where you can enjoy a meal with your friends and family without the awkward peruse of a minimal and boring menu. On our menu, you’ll find that a lot of the dishes we offer are already either veggie, vegan or gluten free – just because we’ve chosen to miss out the meat or gluten, doesn’t mean that we’re missing out on the flavours! And what’s better, if you fancy a dish which doesn’t quite meet your requirements, we’ll do everything possible in the kitchen to adapt it in to a vegan or GF dream of a meal. Even our Full English Breakfast is available as a veggie dish! Lactose intolerant and wondering where you can eat? Come to Cobbles and Clay! Just like our veggie options, we have lots of dishes on the menu which are already served dairy...
Top 3 reasons to visit Haworth, West Yorkshire, during English Tourism Week 2016

Top 3 reasons to visit Haworth, West Yorkshire, during English Tourism Week 2016

It’s English Tourism Week (5-13 March 2016) so we thought it would be a good opportunity to pay homage to our home of Haworth with a blog on the three top reasons to visit the beautiful, literary, tourist hotspot in the heart of Yorkshire’s Bronte country.   The cobbles of Main Street We named our café and pottery painting studio Cobbles & Clay because of our fantastic location on Haworth’s iconic Main Street. The cobbled street is steeped in history and in true Yorkshire style is set on a steep hill, which many tourists find a challenge walking up! But trust us, it’s worth it to make your way up and admire the wonderful views from the top (and of course visit us!) Main Street, which has been graced by daring Tour de France and Tour de Yorkshire cyclists (who have no doubt never tackled such bumpy terrain!), is packed full of lovely independent shops (including our sister boutique gift shop Daisy Days), cafes, restaurants and pubs that make it such a vibrant attraction for tourists and locals alike. Wandering the cobbles and Main Street occasionally stopping off at shops and cafes is a quintessentially English experience which you won’t find anywhere else in the world!   The Brontes Haworth is of course famous for being home of the literary Bronte family – and you can feel their presence and impact everywhere. People come from all over the world to see the bleak moors described in iconic stories such as Wuthering Heights. The must-visit Bronte Parsonage Museum is just a short walk up the road from Cobbles & Clay...
Support Fairtrade Fortnight 2016 at Cobbles and Clay in Haworth

Support Fairtrade Fortnight 2016 at Cobbles and Clay in Haworth

We’re proud to be based in Haworth, the world’s first Fairtrade Village, and are huge supporters of all things Fairtrade, including the annual Fairtrade Fortnight (29 February – 13 March 2016). The Fairtrade Foundation which leads it, says: “Despite our dependence on farmers and workers for the foods, drinks and products that we love, about 795 million people are undernourished globally. The people who grow the food we take for granted can’t always feed their own families. We can support farmers and workers to put food on the table for their families by harnessing the power of Fairtrade produce.” So, this Fairtrade Fortnight, we’re asking people to think about where their food and drink has come from and choose Fairtrade products wherever possible, which is something we always try to do in the café. It’s not as difficult as you think – here are some ideas: Enjoy a Fairtrade Coffee or Hot Chocolate All the tea, coffee and hot chocolate we serve Cobbles & Clay is Fairtrade – and our customers tell us it’s very tasty! Choose cakes made using Fairtrade ingredients Treat yourself to one of our cakes knowing that it’s been made with ingredients like Steenbergs Organic Fairtrade Vanilla Extract, which you can also buy in the café to add to your own creations at home! Make your tipple a Fairtrade one You can even support Fairtrade Fortnight when enjoying a glass of wine. The Stellar Organics Running Duck Fairtrade Wine we sell is a huge hit with our customers and has been made according to the ‘Fair for life’ guidelines, which means that all workers involved...
What does your Pancake Day topping choice say about you?

What does your Pancake Day topping choice say about you?

Pancake Day (which this year is on Tuesday 9th February) is one of the few times of the year when you don’t have to feel guilty for having a dessert for dinner! When we updated our menu last year, we introduced homemade pancakes and waffles with an assortment of different toppings which have gone down a treat with both locals and visitors. We are firm believers that any calories consumed on Pancake Day simply don’t count, however if you are looking for a healthier option, we can serve you up a portion of pancakes with fresh fruit and berries. So what does your pancake topping choice say about you? Here are our pancake horoscopes:   Lemon and sugar: You are a big fan of keeping things simple. You don’t like to over complicate anything so stick with the ‘less is more’ rule, and with a scrumptious dish like this you do right! Fruit and cream: Is it summer yet? We might only be in February but you can’t wait for a bit of sunshine! Pair this with our Berry Burst smoothie and you’ll be living the summertime dream. Butter and jam: You live for breakfast time and have no problem with having dishes others may see as a morning snack at any time of the day. Banana and chocolate sauce: Take a walk on the wild side! You have convinced yourself that this dish is basically a salad and don’t worry, we believe you! Bananas are full of potassium and other good stuff so you’re actually giving your body a good treat. Ice cream: No matter how old you...

At Cobbles and Clay, we love to see our visitors enjoying each other’s company. Whether it’s over a morning cup of coffee or a late afternoon glass of wine, it’s great to see friends or couples spending quality time together in the comfort of our café and pottery painting studio on Haworth’s Main Street. Valentine’s Day is a special day dedicated to sharing the love and those who are currently single shouldn’t have to miss out on all the fun! Bring your group of friends to our café and paint each other something special to remind them that they are loved. Our heart shaped plaques are perfect for writing a short phrase about what you like most about your best friend, and it’s something they can keep forever to remind them of your special day together. We’re based right in the heart of Bronte Country, which is a great location for sharing your love life woes since the famous literary sisters knew a thing or two about heart-ache! If you do want to visit with your loved one, there’s also something strangely romantic and atmospheric about our gorgeous little industrial village with cobbled streets and historical buildings. Our Yorkshire sharing board is the ideal lunch to pick at whilst you’ve got your creative hats on, and we’ll even serve it up with little heart shaped dishes! Kick off your New Year’s Resolutions at Cobbles

Kick off your New Year’s Resolutions at Cobbles

As we step into a shiny New Year, many of us will be following the old tradition of making a resolution to give us a focus and ultimately help us feel like, better-rounded people! When it comes to resolutions we find that keeping it simple is the key to success so thought we’d try making things a bit easier for all of our lovely customers by suggesting a few ideas: Learn a new skill – Not just a good way to pick up a new talent, but it would also open the door to meeting new people. Whether you’re feeling creative, musical or adventurous to try new things, there’ll certainly something going on in our local area of Haworth to get you inspired. Jill completed a course with Grand Illusions Vintage Paint last year to learn how to refurbish pieces of furniture, and if you want to do something similar please get in touch as we are thinking of running a course in the café. We are also running an adult contemporary stitching group starting on 14th January and sewing for fun workshops with Diane from Wave of Nostalgia starting on 9th February, more information about these classes can be found on our Special Events page. For other creative new skills, whether it’s Yoga or Bollywood dancing, check out what our friends at Kala Sangam have to offer for unique classes and events, you might find your calling! #DryJanuary – You may have spotted the advert on television at the moment promoting #DryJanuary, a great way to give your body a well-deserved break after getting into the festive spirit....
